DirectoryI published the Urban Worm Directory¬†a few days ago to help people find out where to buy worms and worm castings and it has already gotten some awesome feedback and was quickly responsible for a sale in Colorado. ūüôā ¬†We're up to over 60 businesses in 26 states, 3 Canadian provinces, and 4 countries. ¬†The response has been fantastic but I know there are still plenty of sellers to contact to let them know this tool exists for them! ¬†(Maybe you'll help?)

This is going to be a great resource for both buyers and sellers.  While higher-priced sellers may not like seeing lower-priced competitors nearby, everyone benefits.

I'm really happy with the progress.

The Urban Worm Directory's Benefit to Buyers

1.  Price Transparency

Prices for worms and castings can vary wildly, even when both business are in close proximity to each other. There are some simple reasons for this.

One seller may be low on stock and is plenty happy staying with fewer — but more profitable — sales at $39.oo per pound. ¬†Another seller may have a surplus and is willing to let his wigglers go for $20. ¬†In any case, the Urban Worm Directory gives the worm buyer another tool to find the price and location that suits him.

Note:  You may notice some sellers offer a higher price for local pickup for worms or castings than they do for the normal retail price, knowing they'll make it back on the shipping.  While there is nothing wrong with this practice, finding a worm seller nearby that offers local pickup lets you know the real price of their worms.

2.  Savings on Shipping

While fuel prices have come down, curiously shipping prices have not.  So while a pound may cost $20 online, you might pay anywhere from $8 to $15 to have it shipped.  Finding sellers willing to offer local pickup obviously lets the consumer save on that shipping.

How Sellers Benefit

1.  Google Finds You More Easily

Many of us are just getting started online and want our businesses to be seen as much as possible by Google and the other search engines as search engine results drive a huge proportion of traffic to your site.  If you think of a website as a town, think of every blog post, every page, every product page, ahem, and every link from another site like the Urban Worm Company as a little road for visitors and Google to find your town site.  (Now if CNN links to your site, that would be a superhighway).

Do you have worms or castings to sell?  List your business now!  Seriously, it takes like 30 seconds.
So the more ways Google has to find you means it is more likely they'll rank you higher when a buyer goes looking for worms.  And this is especially true if that buyer is nearby.  Read on . . .

2.  Local Buyers Find You More Easily

Each business listed in the Urban Worm Directory has their city, state, and zip/postal code attached to their listing, allowing our maps to automatically show their locations.  So when someone who lives near you visits our site to find a worm or worm castings seller, they will be able to see what listings are showing up nearby.  The very first day the Directory was launched, a customer in Colorado used it to find a worm seller within driving distance.

Now it's always best practice to list your address on every page on your site (like the footer).  But if you don't the Urban Worm Directory can help out by attaching your location to your name, helping local customers find you more easily.

Thanks So Much!

Again, we're off to a great start.  If you haven't visited the Urban Worm Directory, please check it out and let me know what you think!.  If you have worms to sell, I really would love to see you list your business.
